DR NESTOR'S CLINIC - Nurse Practitioner Amanda
Tell us about you?
I originally grew up in Lancashire, North-west England, and lived in London for 7 years where I worked in aesthetics at numerous prestigious clinics. I’m a registered general nurse and an independent nurse prescriber too. It was in London that I met my husband who was living in Edinburgh. Making the move to the Scottish capital was one of my best moves. Shortly after, we were blessed with a gorgeous little boy, Theo.
Is it hard being a working Mum?
The first year of parenting was a shock to the system. I remember feeling quite lost. I was incredibly career focused before Theo and it took time to adjust to mummy life. Saying that, it’s one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I feel a new sense of purpose. Theo is now 2, and I’ve managed to balance work and being mummy. I have days off where we enjoy quality time together and do things such as swimming. Other days where I’m working, seeing patients, or doing my Masters (eMBA). It’s a juggle but my husband and family are very supportive.
Why does skin change during and after pregnancy?
Hormonal changes, breast feeding, dehydration and lack of sleep… it all affects your skin. We often see patients for skin assessments when they become pregnant as there are certain ingredients such as retinols that can’t be used during pregnancy, so we find pregnancy safe alternatives. Also, in the postpartum period, we see conditions such as acne, rosacea, pigmentation which can all be triggered by hormone fluctuations.
Do you think me-time is important?
Yes, definitely. When I’m looking and feeling good, I’m more confident. If I haven’t managed to look after my skin properly, workout or take time for me then my confidence takes a hit. My top tips would be put your skincare in the bathroom so when you are bathing your little one you can have 5 mins to apply them. I’d also recommend doing a to-do list in the morning and including dedicated time for you.
What is a common concern you see from Mums coming to Dr Nestor’s Clinic?
Skin issues. Many mums also just want to feel like themselves again (this can be due to body and skin changes that they need to address). We have lots of treatment options available, but I always work with patients on a skincare regime first. It’s not worth paying for treatments if you don’t take care of your skin. We then discuss different treatments including injectables, device treatments and potentially chemical peels depending on their needs.
What is the best rejuvenating treatment at Dr Nestor’s Clinic?
We are the only clinic in Edinburgh to have a fantastic new laser which works well for anti-ageing concerns, pigment marks (age spots), redness, mild acne, and pores. It’s non-invasive and gives incredible results!
The best thing about your job?
Making patients feel confident again. I spend a lot of time listening and getting to know my patients. I want to understand what it is that makes them self-conscious so that I can then come up with the perfect treatment plan, just for them.
